GRASP — Get your shooting hand onto the grip of the snubby. Your hand should be in a firing grasp before you proceed further. You should have a solid grasp on the gun, with your fingers properly wrapped around the grip and your shooting hand thumb curling down, before you pull the gun from the holster. If your holster has any retention devices, such as a hammer strap, they need to be defeated as you get your grasp on the gun.
UP — Pull the snubby out of the holster and bring it as far away from the holster (usually up) as you comfortably can, but don’t blow out your elbow or shoulder trying to exaggerate the position. Keep the barrel parallel to your thighs at all times. This prevents the muzzle from being pointed at any part of your body, and is key to drawing the gun safely from disadvantaged positions (which we won’t be covering in this book, but it’s best to build safe habits from the beginning!)
ORIENT — Point the muzzle at the target (or threat), being careful not to let its path cross any part of your body. You’ll end up with the snubby in a position very similar to the ready position: the gun will be roughly around the middle of the torso, your elbows close to your body, and the barrel roughly parallel to the ground. As I said above, you’re moving through the ready position during the draw.
EXTEND — As you’ve already learned, the gun is extended from the ready position toward your target. You should end up with your arms extended an equal amount and as far as possible. The elbows should ideally be in their locked position before you touch the trigger.
TOUCH or TOUCH & FIRE — Place your finger on the trigger and smoothly increase the pressure applied by your trigger finger until the shot fires.
